As Black Friday once again descends upon the UK, we’re joining the Just A Card movement and declaring today INDIE FRIDAY – a day to celebrate and support the indie retailers that make our towns unique.
We never get tired of banging the drum about Bedford’s amazing independent retailers. From fishmongers to fashion boutiques, bookshops to bakeries, they are the businesses that often go the extra mile, offer amazing product knowledge, excellent customer service and enhance our town centre.
The JUST A CARD campaign aims to encourage people to buy from designer/makers and independent galleries and shops by reinforcing the message that all purchases, however small, even ‘just a card’ are so vital to the prosperity and survival of small businesses.
The campaign came about when artist & designer Sarah Hamilton saw the quote, “If everyone who’d complimented our beautiful gallery had bought ‘just a card‘ we’d still be open.” This prompted a call to action and the Just a Card campaign was born.
“People seldom realise the considerable costs involved in keeping a shop open,” said Sarah. “Power, materials, wages etc need to be met before even a penny of profit can be realised. Running a shop is often a labour of love. Without dedication and passion, and crucially sales, it would be another boarded up eyesore.”
As part of our Shop Local Bedford Campaign we’re embracing Indie Friday and hope you can too. You can find a list of many of Bedford’s independent shops in our Directory.
If any shops would like a Just A Card sticker to display in their window, please get in touch.
