The Mill Theatre is a conversion of a former water mill known as Stoke Mills and it opened as a theatre in 1979 with “Salad Days” and productions now include a mix of drama, musicals and variety.
The Mill Youth work under the umbrella of the full society yet have a unique character of their own. The Youth is led by a mix of fully qualified teaching professionals and long-standing youth performers.
Over the year they hold a range of workshops, activities, social events that engage the youth, not only on a production basis but also they hold small showcases, mini-tours to local schools and community venues as well as staging youth shows in the main theatre. The students direct, write mini plays or presentations, produce, stage-manage, light and tech shows, set design and set build.
For the past two years they have been raising funds, through the Warm-Up Appeal, to enable them to install a green-energy based heating and ventilation system. Phase 1 of the project has recently been completed which involved putting in a system for heating the auditorium based on water source heat pumps using the water from the Mill stream. The challenge now is to raise the funds to repay loans and to embark on Phase 2 of the project which involves extending the system to the rest of the building.
